What makes an online visit count

# A screen does not remove the care checks

Keep this in mind

Online care can involve a live conversation or answers reviewed later. Deciding which care suits you takes enough medical information, even when the visit happens online.

U.S. prescribing rules checked September 26, 2026.

## Start with where you will be sitting

The U.S. health department (HHS) says your location matters: check which state you will physically sit in for the appointment. The person treating you needs a license from that state or another form of permission it allows.

HHS license guidance

Some states let a person licensed elsewhere register to provide online care there. Each state sets the conditions for that permission.

HHS guidance across state lines

Which state will I be in for the visit?

Who will provide my care? What is that person’s name in full, and what job title do they hold?

How are they allowed to treat someone in that state?

Keep this in mind

Look up the person, then come back to the service. A clean public record is useful information, but it does not grade the quality of care.

## Use the board record

State medical boards issue doctors’ licenses and maintain records the public can read. Look there for the doctor’s license status and any formal board action concerning their work. It may also show formal charges still waiting for a decision. The detail shared varies by state.

What medical boards publish

The Federation of State Medical Boards collects links to the state boards. Check whether the doctor has MD or DO after their name: some states have separate boards for these two types of doctor.

Find the state board

These doctor searches do not cover every person who can provide care. Ask which board licenses the person you will see.

## A form can begin the conversation

A form with fixed questions cannot, by itself, support a treatment decision under the Federation’s guidance. The doctor needs a way to ask you further questions whenever necessary.

Guidance for online care

This is guidance for medical boards, not a single rule that replaces each state’s law.

A later message with questions is different from an automatic yes. If something is unclear, ask how to keep the questions going in both directions with whoever treats you.

Keep this in mind

The assessment has to leave room for an answer other than the medicine you first asked about.

## Video cannot settle every question

The Federation’s guidance requires the doctor to handle a needed test by doing it, setting it up or referring you for it. The doctor must also arrange care in person when the medical problem requires it.

Guidance on further checks

Ask who will arrange that next step, where it will happen and how the results return to the person treating you.

## A closer look at the evidence

### Guidance and law answer different questions

National guidance explains what information a doctor needs to decide on care. Your physical location during the appointment determines which state’s rules the person treating you must follow.
